Meet:
Allyson Little

Ally-whitebridge-5

This week I grabbed a few quick moments with Mel, the busy owner of Pegs Cafe in Whitebridge. She has created something pretty unique in our Village and on top of all-round wonderful food and coffee, she is now offering very popular themed nights, which we are loving. I remember a baked dinner theme night a little while ago, and wow that was awesome! We actually went three times that month with different friends and family because we couldn’t get enough of it.

Pegs-2

What inspired you to start your own cafe

I’ve always loved hospitality, it’s something I’ve always done. We’ve been here, coming up to 5 years in December. The whole community has supported me, I can’t thank the Whitebridge people enough for their support.

Pegs-8

Why Whitebridge

I love the Whitebridge community, my family lives around here and it was definitely the place to start something special.

Pegs-6

Where did the name Pegs originate

Pegs is named after my three children. I have Pollyanna she’s 5, and I have twin boys Eddison and George and they’re 7. The ‘S’ is the part that brings everything together, my amazing staff.

Pegs-5

Tell me about your awesome theme nights

Mel: Theme nights are going really well. Once a month we have a theme with a set price per head and the community’s loving it. We offer them on a Thursday and Friday night.

Ally: We love having you guys so close. The other week we celebrated Steve’s birthday on Friday night and it was amazing! The food, the atmosphere but above all the service. You’ve got some valuable people working with you that create something really special.

How did Women of Whitebridge begin

I started it as a way to bring women together and give them an excuse to go out once a month to catch up. We’re finding ourselves so busy now, so I wanted to provide an opportunity for our amazing female community to set aside some quality time with each other. I actually found it hard to catch up even with my sisters, so it’s a good excuse to meet for dinner once a month.

Next WOW night is on October 6th 2017

Planned for three, stayed for 10

Thong is such a character, he’s a genuinely great guy that brings a lot of joy to the community. I love Thong’s enthusiasm and love of life, plus he makes an awesome steak sandwich.

Meet:
Allyson Little

Ally-12

This week I sat down with my local food lover and all round nice guy, Thong. We chatted about all things life and work. He’s such a happy, hilarious guy that he’s just infectious with his love of people. When we drive past in my husband’s wedding cars, he’ll yell out “Ally, I’m waiting, I’m ready.” We’ll have to take him for a spin one day soon. Thong is such a character, he’s a genuinely great guy that brings a lot of joy to the community. I love Thong’s enthusiasm and love of life, plus he makes an awesome steak sandwich.

How long have you been at this location

10 and a half years, I was in Sydney before that. I couldn’t afford to start my own business in Sydney so my wife and our twins boys moved up to Newcastle.

IMG_0031

What inspired you to get involved with this business

I like food. The boys are involved too, they help us on the weekend and Friday nights. They’re about to finish school with plans of heading off to uni.

IMG_0040

What do you bring to your local community

I think the happiness, I always have a joke with anyone that comes into the shop. I like to make people feel happy. When we came up from Sydney, my plan was to live here for three years and then head back to be with our families. But all of a sudden I love it up here, people love us. We bought property around here.

IMG_0057

What do you love most about living locally

We love the lifestyle, it’s very relaxing. Even when I’m working hard I’m still really loving it.

IMG_0076

Do you ever have a day off

Christmas Day, Boxing Day. I do have Tuesday afternoons off but only a couple of hours. I spend that time shopping, paying bills and other things that have to be done when running your own business.

IMG_0049.jpg

What are you thankful for

I’m very thankful that I live in Australia, a place we’re proud to call home.

IMG_0053

How do you want to be remembered

As a good person, a happy chap with a kind heart. Always helping people. That’s very important to me.

Over the next few weeks, I will be chatting with some of my locals to gather some insights into what they love about our Whitebridge community.

Next week I’ll be chatting with Melanie from Pegs Cafe.

The unexpected welcome of a community

Whitebridge is one of those hidden gems amongst the local community. To an outsider, it seems like the go-between for people who live in the suburbs and the beach. But when you start digging, this place has something truly unique to offer.

Meet:
Allyson Little

Ally-12I never had plans to move to Whitebridge, I’ve lived mainly in New Lambton, which I have always loved. When my husband Steve and I decided on a change we wanted to live somewhere different. Steve’s a builder so we found this really cute house on a large block which he could renovate and re-sell.  We weren’t  planning on living out this way but we felt very relaxed and comfortable with the area and decided to stay. We have now called Whitebridge home for the last 10 years!!

Ally-whitebridge-7.jpgWe didn’t realise what Whitebridge had to offer, but we fell in love with the relaxed lifestyle and friendly feel. I love the fact that it’s only a short stroll down to Fernleigh Track to take my dog Billie for a run. We always run into to someone up for a chat along the way.

Ally-whitebridge-6.jpg

Every time our grandkids are in town we have to take them down to the dam to feed the ducks which is literally two minutes from our house.

IMG_1902Josey Ellie Nanny

We love the convenience of the local shops at the top of our street. Everything is there that we need. The general vibe of our community is amazing!

IMG_0079

We’re lucky enough to have the best neighbours. On Sunday afternoon young Kyle from across the road bought over two lovely flathead for us that he had caught that day. How amazing is that! The neighbours two doors down bought up two bags of lemons a couple of weeks ago, for us to enjoy.

Ally-whitebridge-9.jpg

We love connecting with people, which this community fosters. For Steve and I, it’s not just the location, it’s the people that have made it easy for us call Whitebridge home. Steve meets a lot of the locals being the Grounds Administrator of Whitebridge High. The kids love to call him “Mr Willy” thanks to the Simpsons reference.

Ally-whitebridge-2

Locals supporting locals

Over the next few weeks, I will be chatting with some of my locals to gather some insights into what they love about the Whitebridge community.

IMG_0108

We also want to hear from you, the Village community. You’ll have the chance to let us know your thoughts by the end of each week for your chance to win some awesome prizes from our locals.

IMG_0033

The first local I’ll be chatting with is Thong, Whitebridge’s Takeaway and Café owner. Not only does he dish up an awesome steak sandwich but he also creates an amazing atmosphere with his warm and welcoming nature.
