Welcome to our way

Introducing Tom Stewart & Kerrie Piefke, they’ll be welcoming you in with a smile and always up for a chat.

Imagine this for a moment…

You’re on the hunt for a new place to call home, you’ve spent the last couple of weeks running around during your lunch break and knocking off early to be the first to check out the new rentals you saw online. You’re booking online for inspections, sometimes you’re the only one turning up, no agent in sight. You call to confirm you’ve got the right time, they tell you it was cancelled because there wasn’t enough interest for that inspection time.

603.738.Hunter.Street.NEWCASTLE-4You come across a property from Villager, which looks like a winner but you don’t see an option to book in for the inspection the coming day. You call in the morning to confirm your booking and Kerrie answers.

“Morning Kerrie, I’d like to book in and see your Hunter Street apartment tomorrow”

Kerrie “Goodmorning, you actually don’t need to book in, we’ll be there ready to meet you. We schedule our open homes for both midday and late afternoons, which allows you to either pop in during your lunch break or after work.”

“Oh, so I don’t need to book?”

Kerrie “That’s right, there’s no need to book in.”

“But how do I know that you’re going to turn up?”

Kerrie “When we advertise our inspections, we turn up at those times. No need to book, we’ll be there ready to welcome you in.”

“But everyone else makes you book in.”

Kerrie “That’s right, we’re not like everyone else, we’re Villager.”

Impressions-10.jpg

This week I caught up with my hairdresser over in Kahibah’s neck of the woods, Impressions Hair and Beauty. I see the guys quite regularly (every three weeks to cover my greys, but don’t tell anyone). They’ve always done a really good job and I love the community feel they’ve created in their salon.

Impressions-7.jpg

How long have you been here

Olivia: My sister, Nadia, has owned this salon for about 7 years.

Impressions-8.jpg

What inspired you to get into hairdressing

When I left school I wanted to follow in my sister’s footsteps and so I went and did an apprenticeship. Now I get to work alongside my sister every day, it’s pretty awesome.

Impressions-5.jpg

Why Kahibah

We’re from Whitebridge, and we’ve lived here for at least 20 years. It’s close to home and we love this area. It’s a really great locality, we’ve got easy access to parking and reasonably priced and we’re all really friendly.

What do you bring to your local community

We bring new hair dos.

There are a few salons close by but it hasn’t really affected us, we’ve got our regular clients that keep on keeping on. now we’re introducing barbering into the salon as well. I’ll be heading that, which I’m pretty excited about. We’ve got a barber chair ready to go, we just need to find a spot in the salon for it.

Impressions-1

What’s the kindest thing someone has done for you since you’ve been here

I think we’ve created something unique that our clients feel really appreciated and a part of our little community. Sometimes our clients bring in little goodies for us at Christmas or they make homemade yummy things and bring them along to share. We just love it!

Impressions-12.jpg

What’s changed for you guys

We’re known for being a Schwarzkopf salon but we’ve recently introduced Eleven, which is an Australian owned business and we love it plus our clients are really enjoying it too.

This week I chatted with my local butchers. The butcher has always had a great reputation in the area. It’s been there for such a long time. You can see that the guys pride themselves on providing quality meat and service. They are always smiling and friendly, and make you feel very welcome whenever you stop by.

IMG_0079IMG_0092

How long have you been at this location

Pat: The butcher shop has been here forever and a day. Jodi took over from Laurie mid last year. It was a well-established butchery in the area, which our locals love to support.

IMG_0081.jpg

What inspired you to become a butcher

Pat: My Aunty was a butcher and owned a shop over at Toronto.
Goran: I loved going hunting when I was a kid. We used to hunt all over New South Wales some of our favourite spots were Wee Waa, Moree, and Merriwa.

What do you bring to your local community

Not only do we supply meat that’s delicious and full of flavour, we also offer a friendly face to everyone that walks through that door.

This week I got to catch up with the guys from Whitebridge Cellars. These guys always look after me when we’re having big get-togethers. They make you feel at home and have a bit of a joke with you. They also have an amazing selection of locally produced wines which are hard to get from other stores.

IMG_0002.jpg

What inspired you to get involved in this business

Radford: Just being part of the local community, helping put a smile on people’s faces.
Lewis: I came here prior to getting the job, asking Radford for a bit of experience and then eventually Radford ended up giving me a job here.
Ally: Plus how could Radford resist that smile from Lewis.

IMG_0012.jpg

What do you bring to your local community

We all may not live in the surrounding area but the community has welcomed us and made us feel like locals. Our staff are always welcoming and friendly to anyone that walks through our doors. To us, fantastic customer service is our number one priority.

IMG_0123.jpg

What are you most thankful for

Radford: I’m thankful for my family. Plus it’s a good, fun environment that we call work. There’s no stress, as long as the casuals turn up on time!! lol

We love the Whitebridge community feel. It has everything you need here. It’s like a small little village. You’ve got your butcher, your bottle shop, supermarket, newsagent, bakeries all bases are covered. If you want to avoid the big shopping centres, look no further.

Ally-whitebridge-5

This week I grabbed a few quick moments with Mel, the busy owner of Pegs Cafe in Whitebridge. She has created something pretty unique in our Village and on top of all-round wonderful food and coffee, she is now offering very popular themed nights, which we are loving. I remember a baked dinner theme night a little while ago, and wow that was awesome! We actually went three times that month with different friends and family because we couldn’t get enough of it.

Pegs-2

What inspired you to start your own cafe

I’ve always loved hospitality, it’s something I’ve always done. We’ve been here, coming up to 5 years in December. The whole community has supported me, I can’t thank the Whitebridge people enough for their support.

Pegs-8

Why Whitebridge

I love the Whitebridge community, my family lives around here and it was definitely the place to start something special.

Pegs-6

Where did the name Pegs originate

Pegs is named after my three children. I have Pollyanna she’s 5, and I have twin boys Eddison and George and they’re 7. The ‘S’ is the part that brings everything together, my amazing staff.

Pegs-5

Tell me about your awesome theme nights

Mel: Theme nights are going really well. Once a month we have a theme with a set price per head and the community’s loving it. We offer them on a Thursday and Friday night.

Ally: We love having you guys so close. The other week we celebrated Steve’s birthday on Friday night and it was amazing! The food, the atmosphere but above all the service. You’ve got some valuable people working with you that create something really special.

How did Women of Whitebridge begin

I started it as a way to bring women together and give them an excuse to go out once a month to catch up. We’re finding ourselves so busy now, so I wanted to provide an opportunity for our amazing female community to set aside some quality time with each other. I actually found it hard to catch up even with my sisters, so it’s a good excuse to meet for dinner once a month.

Next WOW night is on October 6th 2017

This week I sat down with my local food lover and all round nice guy, Thong. We chatted about all things life and work. He’s such a happy, hilarious guy that he’s just infectious with his love of people. When we drive past in my husband’s wedding cars, he’ll yell out “Ally, I’m waiting, I’m ready.” We’ll have to take him for a spin one day soon. Thong is such a character, he’s a genuinely great guy that brings a lot of joy to the community. I love Thong’s enthusiasm and love of life, plus he makes an awesome steak sandwich.

How long have you been at this location

10 and a half years, I was in Sydney before that. I couldn’t afford to start my own business in Sydney so my wife and our twins boys moved up to Newcastle.

IMG_0031

What inspired you to get involved with this business

I like food. The boys are involved too, they help us on the weekend and Friday nights. They’re about to finish school with plans of heading off to uni.

IMG_0040

What do you bring to your local community

I think the happiness, I always have a joke with anyone that comes into the shop. I like to make people feel happy. When we came up from Sydney, my plan was to live here for three years and then head back to be with our families. But all of a sudden I love it up here, people love us. We bought property around here.

IMG_0057

What do you love most about living locally

We love the lifestyle, it’s very relaxing. Even when I’m working hard I’m still really loving it.

IMG_0076

Do you ever have a day off

Christmas Day, Boxing Day. I do have Tuesday afternoons off but only a couple of hours. I spend that time shopping, paying bills and other things that have to be done when running your own business.

IMG_0049.jpg

What are you thankful for

I’m very thankful that I live in Australia, a place we’re proud to call home.

IMG_0053
